Soundtrack Sunday

I remember the first time I heard this song. I was living in Jan's parents house on my mission. My companion and I were in their family room with the door shut, reading our scriptures. Her parents were in the kitchen, watching GMA, and Trisha Yearwood was the performer that day. As she sang this song, my companion and I stopped what we were doing, sat and looked at each other and listened. For those few moments that we were silent-- listening-- it seemed as though time had stopped for us.

That memory is seared into my brain. When the song was over, I gave a silent clap and my companion and I both agreed that it was beautiful... and so very true. Songs really do remember when. I wonder if she remembers that moment when she hears this song. And further, I wonder if it is as vivid of a memory for her as it is for me.

Isn't that the way it is though? Sounds, smells, and photos-- they all have the ability to trigger memories. At least for me they do.

When I get a whiff of coffee, floating through the air-- especially McDonald's coffee , or I hear the CNN Headline News music, I think of the Airport. Any airport really, it doesn't matter. The smells and music trigger the memories of traveling.

When the aroma of bus fumes (eww gross. I know) catch my nose, I immediately think of Mexico City... and the time I spent there with my Dad.

When I smell cigarette smoke (far away from me, if you please), I remember the endless summer nights when I would go and stay with my Grandparents. My grandfather was a smoker, and would sit on the porch and smoke. When I smell that smell-- I get this warm feeling and I see him... Sitting there on his front steps smoking, watching the sunset.

If there is chlorine in the air, I think of my old house in Illinois; and the smell of anything grilling brings me to my happy place.

I guess that is why I really like this whole Soundtrack Sunday thing. The music triggers memories. But, so do smells and images. I want to capture those moments, those memories, and sear them into my brain. I want to pass them on to my children. So that when they hear, see or smell something-- they will remember too.

what are your memory triggers?

Aussie shampoo, conditioner or hairspray reminds me of when I got car sick in Hong Kong and spent a night barfing my guts out. :) I HATE any Aussie hair products. LOL! Isn't that pleasant?

wow...I have so many Memory Triggers!!! Let's see, I think MOST of them are certain songs that make me feel all kinds of funny when I hear them!!! :)

Also, when I smell Old Spice mixed with Irish Spring soap I think of my dad.

When I smell Cover Girl liquid makeup I think of my mom.

When I smell rotten eggs I think of my brothers & their farting Episodes! Hey...I love my brothers, they just farted up the house so much when I was a little kid!

Oh memory triggers!

when the dryer is running on a warm summer day it reminds me of my mom the dryer was always running because there were so many children.

The smell of coffee reminds me of my dad...and I really love the smell! :)

clean sheets reminds me of the times that me and my sister would hang up clothes on our clothes line.

country music reminds me of when we lived on a farm and we would always do crazy things to the music to entertain ourselves.

eating watermelon on a summer day! reminds me of my childhood when my family would be together, either camping or at the park.

I have so many more but do you really want a novel! haha !

love yours

Sawdust is my biggest memory trigger. It reminds me of "working" in the garage with my dad. Love that.

Hey, thanks for your nice comments on my blog today. It makes me nervous to write posts like that. You just never know what people are going to say!

That's how I feel about cow manure. I know, I know..but it reminds me of playing on my Grandpa's farm, looking for newborn kittens in the haystack, and having sleep-overs with my cousins at Grandma's house.
p.s. I LOVE that song!

I have a bad sense of smell (allergies!) and a bad memory - so at the moment I can't think of a thing, though I know it when it reminds me!!!

Cigarette smoke reminds me of my great grandparents house, so do mothballs. The scent of marigolds remind me of my childhood home. I love how scents trigger such strong memories. Well, unless they're associated with something bad that is.

I thought I left a comment for you, but I must have not done the verification right.

I am sitting here with my dad as I am typing.

"I can't believe we wrecked the Lord's car", do you remember that.
My dad is the one that paid the fine. LOL... He just told me that.

And those guns that you sent the sister missionaries, were used playing Charley Angels for hours at their home. They had so much fun with those guns.

Memories really are attached to songs and smells. I am going to see if I can leave this comment annoymous, so that maybe mom and dad can comment if they want.

Hope your week is going good. Take Care. Do you know how to get a hold of Sis. Maybe or Sis. Higginson? They would like to know that. Our Elder Higginson that serves in our ward right now, is the nephew of Sis. Higginson that you served with. So funny huh..

Love Jan
