The Thermostat Wars
Thursday, October 28, 2010
Every single year a battle ensues in my home.
Every. Single. Year. without fail and if there were actual blunt force trauma objects used, there would be lots of blood. Lots and lots of blood.
It's The Thermostat Wars.
{dun dun dun dun}
Jefe likes it cold in the house in winter.
I like it warm inside the house in the winter.
(makes perfect sense, right?!)
Complete opposites.
I hear they attract.
I go to bed each night with my sweats on, tube socks pulled all the way up, and a hoodie --pulled up around my ears.
It's WAY sexy.
Then I have an electric blanket cranked to its highest temperature along with a down comforter, another quilt and a heating pad. I'M STILL FREEZING PEOPLE. Still Freezing.
You know it's cold in your room when your nose is frozen and you can see your breath.
He would LOVE IT if he could keep the windows open during the winter and a fan blowing. All night long. Srsly.
I turn the temperature up.
He turns it down.
And round and round we go.
All winter long.
Now there are plenty of people who get where Jefe is coming from-- they hate to be hot when they sleep, too. I get that. I guess I'm just weird that way-- I like to sleep under my down comforter in the middle of July. I like to be warm, especially when I sleep. If I could get away with having all my blankets and wrapping myself up next to Jefe to bask in HIS body heat while I slept I totally would.
Jefe? Not so much.
The colder the better for him.
The temperature goes up. The temperature goes down.
Which really does numbers on your heating bill.
I know exactly what you are thinking: Put on a freaking sweater, Motherboard. Well, guess what? I do. And, I'm still cold. There is nothing more miserable than being cold. I hate it. Loathe it. Despise it.
I even have a space heater on my desk AND under my desk.
Yes two. Blowing heat at the exact same time. Sometimes even in July.
I joke with people and tell them that the only time of day that I am truly warm during the winter is when I'm in the shower or driving in my car. You can only take so many showers before you start looking like a prune. And, then there's that whole get out of the shower and be cold again thing.
{shudder}
I crank the heat so high in my car that I could wear only a short sleeve shirt, and I like it. A lot.
I heard somewhere that like 75% of women like to sleep warm and 75% of men like to sleep cold. So maybe we're not headed down the divorce highway after all.
I'm seriously considering buying me some of those Split the Sheets and a dual control mattress pad . I can have the polar fleece side of the sheets and he can have the cotton. I can have the mattress pad on Sun Heat and he can have his on Blowing Ice Chunks.
It's all about compromise people. That's what makes a marriage work.

Me: Who are you?
Moxie: I MOXIE!
Me: How old are you Moxie?
Moxie: Ummm... Hum.... I 46!
Me: 46? Really?
Moxie: Yup. 46.
Me: Well, if you're 46 that means you're a big girl and you should poop in the potty!
Moxie: I not a big girl! I da baby!
Me: Well. 46 year old's don't poop their pants.

How To Be A List Maker
Tuesday, October 26, 2010
I am a list maker. I make lists for everything, and not just the groceries.
I have a Major Projects List; A Minor Projects List; A Daily To-Do List; A Things I Want To Do Before I Die List and there was even a Things I Want To Do Before I Get Married List.
Lists. They are my downfall because typically I am making my T0-Do Lists posthumously. Except I'm not dead.
For years I was a Covey Day Planner Worshiper. I mean YEARS people. Like before the dawning of cellphones-- YEARS-- I was scribbling away in my day planner. I even went to classes. WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL. So I could learn how to use my day planner more "efficiently".
See? Nerdy List Maker from the get-go.
However, I was never very good at making my lists first thing in the morning. I always made them at night, and wrote down everything I had done that day-- and then crossed it off. Which is sort of NOT the point of a day planner, but hey, I was trying.
Later, after I got married (and tossed my Things To Do Before I Get Married List in the trash) I started doing my posthumous list making during Sunday School. Admittedly, I never would have engaged in such sinful behavior if DeNae were my Sunday School teacher. Pinky Swear. I wouldn't.
But, she wasn't. So I
I lovingly made those posthumous-- sans the death-- lists every single week during Sunday School.
The first time I did this, Jefe was perplexed. "You know you're writing all of the stuff you have to do down on last weeks dates, right?" I looked at him, completely shocked that he didn't make lists like I did. "Umm, No. This is right. This is all the stuff I did LAST WEEK."
He was dumbfounded.
"Why do you make lists AFTER the fact? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of a TO DO LIST? As in Present Tense?" My response was even more earth shattering: "No. I make my posthumous lists because it makes me feel good about myself to see all the stuff I've already done."
Right there is where the continual Eye-Rolling started. Him and me and my List Making.
But you know what? It's true.
Being able to cross stuff off my lists makes me feel all sorts of sparkly.
I make my To Do lists every single morning AFTER I have already done a bunch of stuff. I write everything down, including what I've already done and then immediately cross it off. Makes me feel all productive and responsible doing it that way.
See how effiecent I look there on my list? Most of that I had done BEFORE I made my handy-dandy list.
I'll make sure my list is out when Jefe comes home from work so that he can see how busy I have been.
(And I always make sure to fill the sink with pinesol and let it sit there all day. Jefe LOVES that. Sparkly Puffy Heart LOVES IT. And it makes my house smell like I've been cleaning all the live long day)
(He actually hates that I put pinesol in the sink, forgetting about it and then leaving it there all day. He'll use a fork to pull the plug out cause he thinks its so nasty to stick your hand in cold pinesol water.)
(Whatever. The house smells clean.)
Some days I'll write my list at the end of the day, and the only thing I can think of to put on the list to then cross off is get dressed-- but hey! At least I did something.
And we all know that something is better than nothing.
Even if we have to trick ourselves into believing that we actually did something. That's better than doing nothing. See how handy a posthumous list can be? (Minus the death part.)

Yeah. I have to agree with that statement. Lately TV sort of stinks.
I kicked Glee to the curb-- because HELLO! Totally inappropriate for the 8pm FAMILY HOUR.
Just sayin'.
Which is sad, because I really liked it last year. I feel like they pulled a big-ole bait and switch on us, and that's a bummer.
I guess I'll just have to download the albums instead because I won't have that crap in my house.
*****
I spent the last week up in Yellowstone. It was heaven on earth. Not a soul around --relatively speaking --just the animals and nature. We saw all sorts of animals--Elk, Buffalo (or as Moxie calls it Fuffalo) and yes, even a full grown Grizzly Bear.
Which may have made me pee a little.
Although, I have ZERO proof that I actually saw the Grizzly because I forgot my camera battery charger... so the very last photos I took were these:
It really was awesome.
And horrifying.
All at the exact same time.
*****
The first one is also a member of The Lower Lights, Sarah Sample.
Me Likey. A lot-y.
The other new favorite was pointed out to me by my friend, Barbaloot, and seriously?
Unicorns and Rainbows people. Unicorns and Rainbows.
I'm just sayin'.
I think I have found two more artists that I will have on continuous loop here in Crazyland.
*****
Let's be honest with each other, shall we?
I love Autumn and I am NOT ready for the snow that is heading my way on Monday.
Not ready at all.
The newscaster said it perfectly this morning 'Those that like to ski will be in heaven, the rest of us will sit in the corner and suck our thumbs."
Amen to that.
*****
I was sent a CD in the mail yesterday to listen to and then review. You can read the review and enter a giveaway for the CD on MMB.
I have to say that I am absolutely in love with The Lower Lights.
Pink Sparkly LOVE them.
They make me see unicorns and rainbows while I'm listening and singing along.
Why?
Because they have a Bluegrass sound to them. I am a sucker for good Bluegrass music, and The Lower Lights totally fits that bill. Not only are they a really good Bluegrass band, but they have mastered the old time Gospel feel as well.
Give them a listen and see if you don't want to start a torrid love affair with them!

There are three flies that have somehow ventured into my home and they taunt me. They come around only when I am working on the computer, and they land on the computer screen. It's like they're saying "We're here to stay because we KNOW you won't smack us while we're dancing on this idol you worship."
Which is true.
The smacking part, not the Idol part.
Stupid flies.
Have a swell weekend people. Get ready, because the snow's a commin'.

Dancing Queen(S)
Wednesday, October 20, 2010
Someone asked me last night if I had any shame.
Nope.
None. At. All.
I will do anything necessary to get a laugh.
Especially if it will make others feel uncomfortable.
Like dancing in spandex in front of my entire ward.
(although after watching the movie, I think I should have been MORE flamboyant!)
Note to self:
Flamboyant! Flamboyant! Flamboyant!
Be! More! Flamboyant!
Good times.
Laugh at my expense.
It'll make you feel all sorts of better.
PS. The lady at the end is doing THE SPLITS.
What a ROCK STAR!

Why I Should Have a TV Sitcom
Tuesday, October 12, 2010
I mean, how. Can. younot? (said in my best Shatner voice)
It's based on a Twitter stream of this 29 year old that moved back in with his Dad and just started documenting the crazy stuff his Dad was saying.
It looks funny and I can't wait to watch the show.
It did, however, get me thinking.
My kids could totally make a twitter stream and turn it into a sitcom. Only, we'd call it
$!@%* (Bleep) My Mom DOES.
Let me give you some examples:
1. I won't let Thing 1 or her friends get into the car after the midnight screening of Twilight until they yell at the top of their lungs "Motherboard is the Queen of the Universe. She eats Chuck Norris for breakfast!"
2. Thing 1 and her friends want to do a Chinese fire drill. So, I let them. Except I lock the doors and won't let them back in the car until they do the Thriller Dance in the headlights of the car. (yes. people were behind us.)
3. Moxie shoves a bead up her nose, so I decide it would be a good idea to try and suck the bead out with the vacuum hose. It's not a good idea, nor does it work. And, she might need therapy.
4. Instead of using the vacuum to suck said bead out I BLOW into her other nostril so hard the bead shoots across the room and Moxie looks at me and says "Tank-you Mommy"
5. The whole Pet Sitting Episodes. Bad. Very Bad.
6. My dog runs out the front door and heads off down the street doing Born Free Jumps, while I chase her. We end up in a park and I was having zero luck getting her to come to me. Then I hear the voice of my Jedi Dog Trainer "Curl up in a ball on the ground and yelp like a hurt dog, and she'll have to come investigate." So I do. Every other dog at the park comes over to sniff me. Except my dog. She runs home.
7. I took a shower with the windows open. Need I say more?
8. When I was a missionary I had to visit a family at their gas station. I was waiting for the line to get smaller so we could chat with this guy so I started to play with a giant bowl full of what I thought was chocolate coins. I lovingly caressed the coins, thinking how much I loved to eat that kind of chocolate. I kept telling the guy "I love this stuff! It's chocolate, right?" I would pick out 5. No 10. No 23. And comment again about how much I LOVED this stuff. I couldn't figure out why FOR THE LOVE ALL THINGS HOLY everyone around me was laughing so hard.
Yeah. It wasn't a bowl of chocolate coins. It was a giant bowl of condoms.
9. I totally mocked the men that were coming into the wrong bathroom.
10. I'm teaching a Sunday School class to 13-14 year old girls and boys. We were talking about what a compass does and how it works. One of the boys said he didn't need a compass, he just always knew where North was. Without thinking I said "Yeah. I don't need one either. I have a GPS in my Uterus."
My show would totally be a hit, don't you think? The question on the table now is WHO do I get to play me?
Random Randomness and Then Some Tunes - On a Monday

- Stephen Colbert
Every once a while I decide to switch it up and pretend that Monday is actually Friday. It makes Monday's more doable.
OK. Really? I forgot to do this on Friday, so you get it on a Monday. Besides, today is a beautiful day that needed some attention, music and love.
I've already practiced my dance routine for the ward party. That's right. I'm dancing at the ward party-- complete with a 70's wig, fake eyelashes and go-go boots. We're shakin' our bon-bon's (literally) to Dancing Queen and I only hope I don't get kicked out of church after wards.
Because we are going to rock the house.
*****
This weekend we decided to finally weed the garden. The garden that we didn't plant or take care of the entire summer.
It was nasty.
The weeds were as tall as Thing 3 and it was a little frightening.
That was us. Sans the rats. (I hope.)
We found their little mouse hole, and so we stuffed the hose down it and waited for them to come swimming to the surface. Which they did and it REALLY grossed me out.
What we should have done was thrown smoke bombs down in the hole and smoked them out. Apparently the smoke would come out all their holes and we could then cover them up with dirt and the mouse problem would fixed.
I am hesitant to purchase D-Con because I don't want my dog to get into it. And, frankly, I think D-Con is a totally in-humane option, in my opinion.
I am thinking a smoke-bomb attack is the only way to go. I don't want to see them die, but I sure as heck don't want them in my yard OR house.
Moxie thought Mickey Mouse was in our back yard and she kept running round looking for Mickey. Little did she know that this particular Mickey was about to go visit the Disneyland in the sky.

There is something about Fall that makes my inner Cow Girl come out. It's about the only time of the year that I openly listen to country music.
I blare it on my radio-- much to the horror of Thing 1 and sing at the top of my lungs.
For some reason, hearing riffs of country coming across the air waves makes me feel all sorts of nostalgic inside.
I remember my mission in the fall -- Washington and the Apple Orchards. Man, when those apple orchards started changing color-- it is a testimony to me that God exists.
Then there is Idaho- beautiful Northern Idaho and the logging country. I love it there and if I could convince Jefe to visit I think he would NEVER leave.
Ever.
My mission is by far one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Bar. None.
Except for Illinois. I remember Illinois in the fall and the vibrant colors those maple trees produce and corn waiting to be harvested.
These were places that I lived in the Autumn and they are places that bring some of my happiest memories alive. I don't know why I associate those memories with Country Music-- but I do.
And, it makes me happy.

I did this podcast with my Church back in May. I didn't think it was ever going to air-- but it finally did.

I've found another band that I am totally digging right now. Camera Obscura.
Seriously people.
I pink AND purple sparkly puffy heart LOVE THEM.
My cousin popped this band up on his facebook page this last week. Right before he ran off and joined the MTC.
ha. You thought I was going to say Circus. Which sometimes being a missionary is a little like being in a circus. But, that's not the point.
He has excellent taste in music and will be an even more excellent missionary in the Philippines.

A Lesson on Quitting
Thursday, October 07, 2010
Recently someone told me that I needed to be less involved; less involved at the elementary school, with the kid’s sports, and with their homework.
I really didn’t know how to process that information.
The conversation started because I was lamenting over the fact that I wasn’t involved at the high school and I felt like I was clueless as to what they were doing over there. I wanted to be involved so I could have my finger on the pulse of the school, so to speak. She said “It’s just better to stay out of things and let the kids do what they will.”
I know that she wasn’t implying that I shouldn’t parent my children, but rather to stop being “over involved.”
I look at my high school student’s grades almost daily. I look at their grades to show interest in their schooling and what they are learning.
I email with my elementary students teachers and I have my face in that school constantly.
I go to parent/teacher conference at the Elementary school, the Junior High and the High School. Not because my kids are failing or bad students, but I go because I want the teachers to know that I am involved in their education. I care about what happens to them and how they are being educated.
To be “less involved” to me feels like I am showing less of a commitment to my children. I don’t do all of these activities for me—they are for my children.
I serve on the committees at their school because it directly affects the treatment that they receive from the staff. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is. When parents that are involved in the school go to the school with a problem it is handled much differently than those who are not involved. I’ve seen it happen. The staff takes more seriously the parents who are involved.
So to my friend who told me to be less involved I had to tell her No. That isn’t an option for me, or my family.
Yea, 7:30am choir twice a week with a two year old is hard. I have to get everyone up at 6:30 and out the door by 7:15 to be on time. It’s a pain. But I do it because it puts my face in the school. That’s more important to me than an extra hour of sleep. Or the convenience of just “letting the chips fall where they may.”
This same friend over heard Thing 1 moaning about the amount of homework she had to do and the fact that her classes were so hard. This friend looked at her and said: “There is no shame in quitting. Just drop those classes and get into something more fun.”
I was stunned because I have been encouraging her to keep trying. Do your best—YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS! That has been my on going mantra with her. I want her to know that, and understand that fact. She has it in her to do hard things.
Isn’t that really what life is all about? Being able to do hard things?
If she can learn this lesson now—at 15—she will be miles ahead of where I am.
Life isn’t always a party. Life is hard and sometimes you have to do the hard things—and that’s OK.
Thing 1 just looked at her and said “I love these classes, they’re just hard. I’m not quitting because I’m not a quitter.”
Me either.
I’m not quitting the committees or the choir or the amount of effort I put into their schooling or even being the Warden of the F Zone—because I’m not a quitter and I can do hard things.

I love Disco.
Pink. Sparkly. Puffy. Heart. Love it.
Imagine my sheer joy when someone shared this video on Facebook. Seriously, I was Euphoric. I listened to it over and over and over again!
Moxie and I sat at the desk shakin' our bon-bon. Only the Granny in the video shakes it better than me... So I better get practicing!
I think I've found a new group to love-- Pomplamoose. They have taken a bunch of popular songs and remade them-- playing all the instruments themselves and harmonizing with themselves-- and seriously? Ohh. Laaa. Laaa. I purple-sparkly-heart-LOVE them.
I wonder if they would marry me?
Give them a listen! Check out their fanpage (where you can listen some more!) or follow them on twitter

I sort of wish I was at the beach.
I need a break.
Would you think less of me if I mentioned that I wanted to take this break all solo like?
No kids. No family. Just me, my ipod and a book.
I guess that means I am a selfish-unworthy-to-call-myself-a-mother type of person.

I have eaten Mexican food three times this past week and it has been simply divine.
Twice in one day.
At the same restaurant.
I may have asked the owner if I could swim in a sea of his salsa. And, I was totally serious.
I'm going there again tonight.
Holla!

I don't want you to get the wrong idea about my kids. I love them and they are seriously wonderful.
However.
I totally understand why wild animals eat their young.
They get annoying. And ask for stuff. And throw fits. And make messes. And have major attitudes.
I told my friend recently that I wanted to eat my oldest child, make a new one that looked just like her but was genetically altered to NEVER have a smart mouth or bad attitude.
Lemmeno if you know how to do that.
(just kidding)
(not really)
(only slightly)

This weekend is a huge, worldwide meeting with my entire church. We all either watch the service on the Internet, go to the church to see it broadcast there or be lucky like me and be able to watch it on TV.
I really LOVE these world wide meetings. It's a chance to hear from our Prophet, who is akin to the Pope (for my Catholic friends). It's a wonderful chance to re-evaluate my life-- where I am spiritually and what I need to improve.
We listen to four Two Hour sessions-- two on Saturday and two on Sunday.
I have started live tweeting the conference and it is a fantastic experience. I actually get a TON out of it and I love it because it's an easier way for me to take notes and pay attention.
I have printed off activity books for my kids to do during conference. On Saturday's I only make them listen when the Prophet speaks and then they have to listen to both on Sunday. The activity books are a great way to keep them entertained and interested. Even the teenagers like them.
You can see places for activity books on MMB on this post and this post.

I would be lying if I didn't tell you that I absolutely love the weather we have been having. I love that it's warm during the day and nippy cold at night. I could live like this forever.
I am NOT ready for the snow and the cold. And, the slush and the mush.
Gag.
Not in the least.

Rock Loft – The Bun Basket
Friday, October 01, 2010
Driving along scenic Hwy 89 in Fruit Heights, Utah passers-by may notice a sign announcing “Rock Loft, next right”. Many may assume that the Rock Loft is a store that sells only rocks, and if rocks fail to pique your interest, would simply not stop. However, they would not only be wrong, but they would miss a hidden local treasure. The Rock Loft is not a rock store, but rather a delightful group of shops, nestled into the side of the mountains in Fruit Heights, Utah.
The Rock Loft is a historical marker for Davis County located on the Old Mountain Road. Before I-15 or HWY 89 existed, the Old Mountain Road connected Weber County to Salt Lake City. The space the Rock Loft occupies was formerly a gas station, a dance hall, a cherry warehouse, and city offices. Currently, it is the home to an art gallery called The Canyon Gallery; a delightful knick-knack shop -- Secret Haven; a designer clothing shop appropriately named The Hidden Closet and a restaurant, The Bun basket, which is the focus of this review.
The Bun Basket is a family owned restaurant. Upon entering, guests feel as though they are visiting Grandma's mountain cabin, complete with Grandmas big, wooden kitchen table! The Bun Basket is a bakery and sandwich shop. This little sandwich shop can compete with much larger sandwich chains in terms of quality and value! The menu includes loaded sandwiches of all types, not skimping on any ingredients and homemade bread.
The Bun basket is perhaps best known for its baked goods, in particular the fresh cooked buns. Standard cinnamon buns are available for your sweet tooth, but don't miss out on the blueberry and raspberry cinnamon buns. Getting seconds (and thirds) of these mouth watering treats is a must!
Comfy architecture definitely sets the pace here at The Bun Basket. Guests will never feel rushed to eat and leave. Rather, the ambiance encourages slowing down a bit, listening a little better and perhaps savoring the experience just a bit more. As a prelude to an afternoon shopping in the adjacent shops, the Rock Loft is a refreshing place to grab a meal that feels like one Grandma would make. It is the perfect location for a girls only adventure!
