You will only have friends if you are friendly.
Random randomness and then some tunes
Friday, October 30, 2009
I was trying to find a good Halloween quote for today's random 10, but all I could find were silly poems. Then I ran across this 16 scariest lines from movies. I have to be honest here... I recognize one line... the Sixth Sense one. I
Which I think really puts a kink in Jefe's style. He loves scary movies and haunted houses. I hate them. I've only been to a haunted house once and I got so scared that I literally laid down on the floor in the middle of the haunted house--in the fetal position-- and cried. They had to get a manager type person to help walk me out. With my date. Yeah. Can you say Good times? (and no second date)
*****
I do enjoy, however, trick or treating with the kids and the consumption of candy. It really is the beginning of the end for me. I am the one pushing my kids to go to "just one more house", cause I mean, who doesn't like free candy? Umm... me.
I loves me some candy.
At my house we have this nifty little thing called the "mommy tax". I get to rifle through their bags and pick out my favorites. Then they can eat whatever they want for two days. Then everything goes into a jumbo bowl for the entire family to enjoy (this stops the fighting of he/she is eating my candy) and that lasts for another week, and then I toss it all. If I don't, I will eat it all. And, we all know that Halloween is just the beginning of the food festivals.
I find Halloween a fun holiday. I LOVE to dress up in crazy costumes. But, I also find it an interesting study on people. People who are willing to dress up are willing to look silly, or have fun. People, IMO, that don't want to dress up are ones that take themselves just a little to serious. Life is meant to be enjoyed and to have fun.
Really, Halloween is the only day of the year where we as parents not only allow, but strongly encourage wearing strange clothes (sometimes what would be inappropriate in normal situations), talking to strangers and taking candy from people we don't know. It's quite the juxtaposition, don't you think?
*****
We have the pig flu over here. Thing 1 and Moxie are quite sick. It's been a little disconcerting for me. I have done absolutely nothing except hold Moxie and listen to Thing 1 moan for the last week. When I'm not participating in the moan fest and pacing with Moxie, I'm furiously trying to clean where ever they have been--lysoling like a mad man-- to keep the pigs at bay.
Yes. It's a version of hell. This is the first time Moxie has been sick. I'm pretty lucky in that regard. She isn't all that bad of a patient either. I just can't be out of her line of sight or she freaks out. So I have a new appendage. I hope she will amputate from me once she is feeling better. Cause this totally blows.
Luckily, I've already had it. I know how craptastic they are feeling. Death certainly would feel better than this horrid flu. So, I am more sympathetic than I would be if I hadn't had the pig flu. Does that make a bad Mother? Probably.
*****
Last week, Thing 1 and I were driving somewhere and I had the radio set to a station that was playing 80's ballads. It was a blast driving around singing at the top of my lungs all those tacky love songs from the 80's. The best one? Richard Marx's "I'll be Right here waiting for you". I started doing the sign language to the song. Yup. I know how to sign the entire song in sign language.
Why?
Because when I was a cheesy seventeen year old, I had a boyfriend that was leaving on a Mormon mission. I wasn't going to get to see or talk to him for 2 years. My friend had a boyfriend leaving at the same time too so we decided we wanted to be able to sing/sign them a message that was "profound".
We took a sign language class and learned how to sign this entire song and we sang/signed it to our boyfriends.
I was telling this story to Thing 1, completely lost in the memory of it all when she said: "You took a class to learn how to sign this stupid song to your boyfriend that was leaving on a mission? Holy Crap Mom. You were a dork-wad. That's HOURS of your life you are never. getting. back."
{screeching sound}
And I was immediately brought back to reality by a fourteen year old pointing out how utterly ridiculous my friend and I looked to the rest of the world.
I guess I'm glad I didn't show her what the sign for my name was.
(me giving myself a shot in the arm with a letter D. As in Diet Coke)
*****
In my various Internet surfing I have seen "Ad's" for Mormon's in weird places. Yahoo email Banner Ad's. Site meter Banner Ads. Project play list chat window Ads. It's sort of exciting to see the church being so progressive rather than how they were 15 years ago. When Jefe and I were first married I remember our Bishop getting up in our university ward telling the congregation to "STAY OFF THE INTERNET!" It's evil and of the devil.
I love seeing the churches Banner Ad's all over the place. It is exciting and I'm glad they are embracing technology rather than trying to teach us all to be afraid of it.
*****
Thing 2 and I put together a little Halloween play list for you. Our criteria for making the cut to our list? It had to make Moxie dance. If she danced, then we added it to our play list. We stopped at 15 songs because that's when Moxie decided she was bored and went to find "Ya-ya" (thing3).
This is our version of Random 10 today. Even though its not all that random, play it away and dance with your peeps today! Link up if you post your random thoughts today, or your random 1o songs from ANY play list (including your computer!)
Have a great Halloween and get lots of candy! Keep an eye out for us.. We'll be the FBI agent, Elephant, Cowgirl and Dragon. If you see us, we expect 2 handfuls of candy.
Ummkaythanx.
Catch ya on the flip side!

Thing 1: That's dancing?
Me: Yeah. I have some pretty sweet dance moves, don't I?
Thing 1: Uhhh. No. You look like you're having a seizure.
Me: No I don't. These were sweet moves, back in the day.
Thing 1: Yeah, if you're having a seizure. Jeeze, Mom. The 80's called. They want their dance moves back.

They have a lot of pressures on them,
but overall they want to be good,

Today, write a quick note to a teenager you might know -- not your own teen-- and take it to them with a plate of treats. It will mean a lot to that teen to know that an adult took notice of them. It could make a BIG difference!

Nothing says Autumn as loudly as a Football Game does! When I see the sun setting on a chilly October Friday night, I get an unusual desire to attend football games. It doesn't really matter if its college or high school... I just want to be there, eating a nasty hot dog and hear the smashing of football pads.
Tonight, attend your local high school football game. Its a kick to do with your kids! They will think they've died and gone to heaven. Unless they're teenagers... then they'll just die. (mission accomplished, right?!)

Facebook is mocking me. I know they are. They are sitting in their little facebook room, watching me try to log on. Watching me growl when it tells me "down for temporary site maintenance". Watching me utter a few curse words when it says "your profile is temporarily unavailable. retry in a few minutes." Watching my head spin when I still can't log in.
Then, when I finally do log in there they are, watching me freakout because it tells me I have a big fat ZERO friends. Yet people are still able to comment on my stuff. But I can't comment on my stuff cause I'm not authorized. I can't chat cause I'm not authorized. I can't look at any of the people commenting on my profile cause I'm not authorized and I can't update my profile, cause I'm not authorized.
Well, authorize this facebook.
Seriously. It's making my blood pressure sky-rocket, which is totally stupid. I don't get what the heck is going on.
Stop taunting me Facebook. Seriously. If I have to listen to Thing 1 scream because all three of the computers are "freaking broken" I'm going to scream.
Get it together Facebook, get it together!

I have been in picture heaven this past week. Everything around me is full of rich, deep fall colors. I have been getting some amazing shots this week, and can't wait to post them.
This time of year is my absolute FAVORITE time of year. I love seeing the colors, and the changes. I love the crisp morning air, and breezy afternoons. I love that I can have my windows open and the freshness it gives my house.
When I was a missionary for my church, I served in Central Washington--the heart of Apple Country. My last area was Chelan Washington. It was the coolest place... they had a boat dock at the church (which was right on the Lake) and some of the members took their boat to church because that was faster than driving around the entire lake. Cool huh?
I was sent there in October and I fell in love. The apples were done being harvested, the migrant workers were moving on and the rich colors of gold and red were everywhere. I would have been happy to just wander around all the orchards taking photos.
Chelan is on this amazing lake, so not only did you have the rich fall colors, but in the mornings, you would see steam rising off the Lake. It was some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Someday, I would really like to take my family back there to see where I lived.
Fall.
I really do wish it could be like this all the time.
*****
When I was a missionary, I remember vividly this one particular morning... like it happened only yesterday. On that morning, I remember looking out my window (which faced an enormous orchard) and I saw this man and woman walking with their dogs. They had a boxer, an old English sheep dog, a golden retriever, a Scottish terrier and some other dog that I didn't know the breed. I watched them for some time, the dogs and this couple. I found myself thinking that's what I want when I'm old. An orchard. A companion and lots of dogs.
I've got the boxer.
I'm not a farmer in the least. I have no idea what I would do with an apple orchard, but I want one. BAD. It really is one of my secret dreams.
Not some little silly one in my backyard, but the real deal apple orchard. One where the migrant workers have their shacks in and come yearly to pick my apples. One where I actually have someone clamoring for my apples and a local apple warehouse.
Yes, It's true.
I want to be an apple farmer and have 5 dogs. And, in the fall I want to walk with Jefe through the orchard on a Saturday morning, with the dogs. I want to smell the smoke from the neighbors burning their rubbish, and see my dogs playing in the leaves. I want to hear the distant humm of a chain saw, and the laughing of children running through the orchard playing in the leaves. I want to hear the din of Spanish being spoken by the workers who are packing up to move on to the next crop to harvest. That's what I want. My life to be this... a permanent type of Chelan Fall.
I wonder if I can buy that kind of life on Ebay?
*****
I think my kids may be a little "slow" (in an effort to be more PC). Why? Because every freaking time I get on the telephone, they think that's the time to start telling me about their day. Or ask me "important 'things' ". Seriously. I was on a pretty important phone call yesterday, and my girls were acting like the spawn of Satan. I know the woman on the other end of the phone was thinking What the crap? Her kids are younger than mine, and yet I never heard from them once. My kids? I was constantly having to shoo them away. Hide in the bathroom. Pull them off from fighting with one another.
Spawn of Satan I tell you.
Which made me think... Does that mean I'm Satan's Whore?
*****
So many people have been talking about the Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris. I have to admit, I was a little skittish because they've made the books into an HBO series... and from what I've heard (cause I don't do HBO) is its nasty. Nasty vampires.
My other hangup was the fact that I really hated the whole Twilight saga. Ugh. Edward grosses me out... and Bella. Don't even get me started on Bella. She's a weak, mindless girl. I hated how it was written for teens, yet grown, middle-aged women were fawning over Edward. There were Team-Edward and Team-Jacob shirts even.
If grown middle-aged men were fawning over a female character in a book like the women who read the twilight books I think that without hesitation, women would have no problem calling the men "dirty old men." So, what's the difference? Why can women do it, but not men? Why the double standard?
Anyway. Sookie Stackhouse.
I am surprised to admit that I like them. They're not a book I would recommend reading in your book club with all the members of your church congregation. But, if you want mindless fluff? Give the series a whirl.
*****
We are heading to the mountains for a little R&R. It should be nice. I have downloaded about 10 instant scrapbook kits that are already made (about 8 pages each)... and I intend to do a scrapbook for Thing 3--or Ya Ya as Moxie calls her. I want to give it to her for Christmas, since she only has 1 page done. That's my plan.
Once I get hers done, I plan on using the premade templates to make Moxie a book for her 2nd birthday. Can you believe that? She's going to be two.
Sigh. Makes me sad.

When do you do your best writing?
Me? It's when I'm in the car, driving my kids all over tar-nation. That's when I come up with my post ideas, and I formulate my beginning sentence. Once I have that beginning sentence, everything else seems to just flow. I usually carry a notebook in my car so that when I'm stopped at stoplights I can write down the ideas that I get.
Some of my best posts have been written while I was driving hither and yon. What about you?

When we lived in Illinois, our Pre-K and K program was the best in the state. I'm not just saying that either. We had a phenomenal school district! The entire district sent all the pre-K and Kindergartners to the same school-- it was dreamy! My kids THRIVED at that school!
They also had a program through the school district for babies 18-4yrs that you attend twice a week. It was learning through "play" with the parents. They would sing songs, play with toys, read stories and have a snack. It was only 1 hour at the local library. We attended religiously!
It was through those two programs that I was introduced to Jim Gill. He is an incredible musician that is specifically for children. He sings the best songs for kids-- they make ME want to shake my bon-bon! He has a bunch of albums, but these two are my favorite.

I actually enjoy listening to these CDs-- which is saying a lot. Typically I loathe kid music, but not these ones. AND. I'm not getting one thing from saying this. I just wanted you to know about a great artist that not only your kids will enjoy listening to, but you will too.

The Greatest Generation
Wednesday, October 14, 2009
I have a very real love affair happening in my life. It's with history, and more specifically WWII history. I can't get enough of that era. I secretly wonder if I shouldn't have been born during that time period. Except for the whole women as second class citizens thing, I think I could have been quite happy then! It was a simpler time. And the styles? My word! I do love me some vintage! My favorite movie of all time is the mini-series Band of Brothers. I have watched it so many times that I really do have the lines memorized. I know exactly what is going to happen each and every time I watch that series . . . and yet I still get anxious in the same spots, and I find myself really internalizing the characters and what they were going through.
As a society in general I think we have lost our understanding of the sacrifices that were made on our behalf. Mostly because The Greatest Generation is passing slowly onto the other side. Too soon all we will have are the movies to remind us of what was given and sacrificed on our behalf.
Imagine my sheer joy when I discovered a new series on HBO-- The Pacific. It is done by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg-- the same team that gave us Band of Brothers. It's about WWII in The Pacific. Me thinks I have discovered a new habit-- or addiction. I can't wait to see the whole thing!
Sadly (?) I refuse to have HBO in my home. So I'll have to wait until its out on video. But, I'm telling you what-- as soon as it is? I'm buying it. No questions asked.

That kid knows how to play them too. She just has to look at Jefe-- and blink-- and he will give her whatever she wants!Don't get me wrong, she does get into trouble. Lots of trouble. Like the time she emptied the entire can of Comet all over the kitchen floor. Or the time she climbed into the kitchen sink and sprayed me with the kitchen sink hose dealio.

But when someone is THIS cute how can you stay angry? Especially when she bats those eyelashes at you?
Sigh.Those eye lashes.

Today make some lemonade and sit outside and enjoy a glass or two. Even if its chilly... just wrap up in a blanket. It's a way to stop and enjoy.

Be prayerful."Pray always, lest ye enter into temptation".
I really believe that.
Today, make your prayers more meaningful by pausing before you end
your prayer and just simply listen. You might be surprised by what you hear.

Footloose
Friday, October 09, 2009
Did you know they are remaking Footloose? They are. Zac Effron was supposed to play Kevin Bacons character, but he bailed (boo!). They have some unknown-- Chace Crawford-- in the lead role now.
I'm all over this like an ugly suit! I kid you not! I loved it back in the day and I'm sure it will be even better now!
Just as a claim to fame--- my cousin is one of the dancers in this scene. Yeah. I know. I'm cool like that.

"God is real and beer is great!" I heard that the other day and started spontaneously laughing. Thing 1 and I kept saying it over and over. It's so easy to crack myself up, and when I crack my kids up? Sheer heaven.
I guess I could have a similar statement "God is real and Diet Coke is great!" Then all I would need is a bumper sticker and an Amen.
Amen.

After extreme amounts of peer pressure, I have finally caved. I'm not talking about a belly-button ring or a tattoo of bugs bunny.
No.
I have decided against going to the Owl City concert that is held on the holy sabbath day.
Mostly because DeNae, my adopted big sister, was right. She told me my kids would never let me live it down, and the mere fact that I had even considered it was ammunition enough for Thing1 to try getting the sun moon and stars from me.
But MOM! You're going to Owl City. I heard it from my friends at school! (which btw sort of freaked even me out! What the crap?) Why can't I do blah blah blah . . .
No. As much as I want to, I'm not going to the Owl City concert. I will however be holding a mini concert in my backyard with a fire pit and a CD player. It's almost like the real thing, right?

I really need someone who knows how to decorate come and save me from myself. I am clueless. Jefe informed me that he really wanted me to decorate our house, seeing as how we've lived here for four years now. Jeeze.
The problem is I have no freaking clue what to do to decorate. Isn't the fact that it's clean enough? And, its not. I do want a decorated house. I see the homes around me, and in the magazines and I would love to have my house look like that. I just don't know how, or where to start.
Oh mighty decoration God, please send me an angel muse to tell me how to decorate my house.
Please. I beg you. Save me from the tackiness that is starting to plague me.

Choir started this week for me. I teach 100+ third through sixth graders choir twice a week from 7:30am -8:45am. For free. We learn all sorts of fun Christmas music and then give a concert at the beginning of December.
When I have to get up before dawn even had a butt-crack, I hate it. I have to get all the kids ready, fed and watered and then be at the school before 7:30am. Yes, even Moxie. It sucks, its hard and its cold.
But once I'm there? I love it. I love every stinking second of it. I love this kids and teaching them to sing. I love to sing with them. I love watching Moxie watch the kids. And, I love being with two of my dearest friends for that amount of time. We tease each other and laugh like crazy. It is fun. It's a ton of work, but its gratifying work.

There is only one time a year that I allow my inner cowgirl to come out and it's fall. I know that Tib is having a seizure in here chair right now, but it's true. In the fall, I like country music. Nothing TOO twangy . . . but country When I was a little girl, I wanted to be a cowgirl when I grew up. It's true, I did. I have the photos to prove it. I loved all things horses and would lay in bed at night trying to figure out how I could convince my Dad to buy me one. Luckily I had Uncles galore that had horses, so there really was no need. I could ride horses until the cows came home. Then my Daddy would ride... and bring them on in.
My Uncles all owned a cattle ranch and so we would go up to Wyoming, near Fort Bridger, and have these huge cattle drives. Us kids would watch our super-hero Dads riding the horses hard, bringing the cows in for branding and butchering.
You know, I had never had store bought meat until I was in college... Maybe even older? We always had our "cows" to eat. I was shocked when I went to the store to buy hamburger, and it didn't come in white butcher paper.
We would hold our very own family version of a rodeo with the calves. The big cousins would barrel race with the horses and it was heaven I tell you. Well, at least for me it was. I wanted a life like that-- a country life.

Something about harvest time and fall makes my inner cowgirl rear her head and make me take notice. This time of year I am not allowed to ignore her any longer. So in the fall, I listen to country music until it starts to snow, and then I go back to the "regular" play list.
